URGENT!!!! Iguanas at local fair!!!

CobraKing Oct 17, 2006 12:34 PM

My fiance and I recently went to the local county fair in York County, SC and we saw baby iguanas up for "prizes" at one of the game booths. There were around 25 or so stuck in a little wooden crate wrapped in plastic wrap. There was no light, no food, no water, and the outside temp was around 60 degrees. I've read recently that offering iguanas as prizes is illegal in SC and I've contacted the local Humane Society. My question is are there any other organizations I can contact? Thanks for any help offered.

normally the local animal control cannot do anything but
Dept of Ag normally can. The only question would be if
they have jurisdiction on fairs or not. I know they
do on pet establishments.

It is pathetic what people will do to earn a buck!

Since iguanas are 'known' carriers of salmonella, giving them away as prizes is a health risk. Health Departments are usually the most willing to take action. Good luck.

I called a Police Dept in PA because I received a complaint. They asked me if I knew the number of the code. I gave it to them. THey called me back and told me that the vendor was awarding the critter keeper and selling the iguana for $1.00. We read the law together as PA amended their first law to include this.

GOOD LUCK AND DO NOT GIVE UP!!!!!

The Police have handcuffed and taken the game owner away. This happened Friday night because an iguana owner stood there and called animal control.
