Best Brand of Night Bulb?

HappyHillbilly Oct 18, 2006 01:22 AM

I'm looking for some input on the best brand of incandescent night lights. My 60-watt red Zoo Med just went out after only 3 weeks. I'm using one of the black reflector domes with ceramic base. Can't remember what brand it is. ESU, I think.

Thanks!

I just put in a 71/2W appliance bulb (it looks like a ping pong ball with threads on one end) and think it's just right. I was using red for light and heat, but i didn't have a problem with the heat so I switched. It's not very bright so it doesn't seem to bother them, and since it's white I can see them better too. I also decided to aim mine away from the tank so they get indirect light and rest easier if they want to.
I've used red, and black light, this is more like moonlight. I don't know for sure if the color makes a difference to them, but to me this is more natural.

Thanks UroTamer!

I imagine the 7 1/2-watt bulb directed away from the cage wouldn't be much more, if any, than a full moon. That sounds like a good idea.

However, in my case, I need the heat because my reptile room is an enclosed garage with no thermostat-controlled heating. I'll probably get a blacklight this time around just to see how it looks. I liked the warm glow of the red, but I've been wanting to try the black, too.

Probably just a fluke, bad bulb, that made this one go out so soon.

Thanks, again, for taking the time to help me out!

Take care!

I have mine in an enclosed area of my garage (like a sub-room) and I use one of those $20.00 room heaters with a thermostat to regulate heat. It saves energy because it doesn't run all the time like a regular house furnace. So this way I save money two ways. If I really need to I can aim the heater towards the cage so it catches a little direct heat to warm the glass too.
Good luck. Kenn

My enclosed garage is too big for a portable electric heater. I'll be using either kerosene or wood, neither of which is too much fun to use, let alone to try to regulate it very much.

Thanks for the input, though!
