Can anyone tell me some information on the probing of Black Pine Snakes? I'm under the impression that generally anything over 5 scales is a male, and mine is exactly 5. Any info would help.
Thanks,
Nick

How old is it and how large is the snake? 5 subcaudal scales seems suspiciously "shallow" to be considered 100% male. Typically, gently probing to 8-9 subcaudal scales is a sound indication of a male. Did you try to evert the hemipenes (popping)?

The snake is of an unknown age as it was a donation to a nature center I work at. It is definately an adult. I believe it may be female because of its sheer size and girth; however body type is never a definate indication. I will re-probe and check; also my boss was saying that males can go in as deep as 12 scales so I will re-probe and if it turns up to be 5 again I will assume its female.
