Ladder Tail Cont'. Dial up Beware!

SoCal-619 Oct 18, 2006 04:38 AM

I was lucky enough a while back to get this guy from Denny and Kathy Rimes.

As far as I know he was born at Next World Exotics along with another male that displayed an almost identical ladder tail. The other male was purchased by Mr. Gray Rushin and then later sold to another person. When I spoke with both Gray and Denny the question was always "Do you think It's genetic"?

For not being arabesque or motley the tail is almost unreal,

but what is even more intriguing is the fact that there was one more in the same litter that displayed almost the exact same tail... something there???

During the 05' breeding season I had an extra possible het. female. This female also retained a very light backround color that I love and thought It would compliment the males color very well.

I decided to put him in with her and see what happened. He got straight to work and everything went right by the book. On 109 days P.O.S. she gave birth to a beautiful litter of 13 babies, no slugs, and no still born or deformed.

I was exited about having the litter but was also very anxious to see if the tail would be passed on...as I dug through the slimy pile'o'babies there it was!!! Although many of the babies displayed aberrancy's (all in the tail) only one, a male, came out with a tail that closely resembled the sire of the litter.

I'm pretty confident at this point that this trait can and will be passed on (in varying degree's) to the offspring. I'm anxious now to breed the original male, possibly to a different feamle this year and hopefully get a better understanding of whats going on. The babies are all doing great and are showing nice colors like both of their parents. As of now I've held back the entire litter, but am unsure If I will be able to due to more babies expected this comming season...we'll see!

Adriel,

Haveing seen this snake in person,I'd have to say that the pics don't truly do him justice. I remember clear back to when you first got him and he has just improved since then. Pretty neat that the trait appears to be genetic and that you have an 06' laddertail male to keep and raise up (Or sell it,Godforbid!) You might need to purchase more Boaphiles if you intend to hold back the entire clutch. Looks like more good things are coming your way in this next new year and even more new projects. Couldn't have happened to a nicer guy. Congrats again.

Sincerely,

I own the other male. Gray sold it to Chad Ott and I purchased the animal from him about a year or so ago. He is by far the best laddertail I have ever seen and I am amazed him everytime I take him out. My picture host is down right now or I would put a picture of him out there. I am glad to see yours potentially could be genetic. Mine will be bred to another genetic stripe this year to prove it out. I am confident it will.

Congradulations man! You have your self an awesome male, please keep us posted as to the results of the litter, Im sure your results will be similar to mine. It will be exiting to see what it happens when combined with another genetic stripe animal. I have to agree with you that these boy's are awesome to look at, he has been a pleasure to work with over the years. I'd love to see some recent pics of him when you get a chance, take care and keep us posted,

Good luck to you. Just remember that if more then one snake is displaying ladder tails it is most likely caused by variations in temperature during development....then again it could be genetic...regardless you have a beautiful snake.

Hey Adriel,
He is looking great! Glad to see that project going well for you. I am now really kicking myself for letting him go, of course I was doing that the day I had to bag him up when we sold him. You know sometimes you look back and say "What the heck was I thinking when I did that?". LOL Seriously though, I am truly happy that he got such a good home.
Best of luck,
Kathy
