Help! Problem Feeding Dum's.

feodenenaslinda Oct 18, 2006 11:37 AM

i have two female dum's, they are not that quite interested in eating almost ever unless i bother them with a mouse until they get mad enough to grab and kill it, then eat it. i understand this is not safe or healthy, i am tired of trying to do this just so they can be in good physical shape. i have read alot of forums about dum's, i understand they like baby quails. 3 questions..

1. Can my dum eat quails alive at the dum's age of less than a year?
2. Where can i find baby quails? I've tried to look for them in pet shops but nobody has them.
3. A former co-worker told me that i would have to rip the quails beak and feet off so i wouldnt harm the snakes stomach? Is that true.

also are there any other strategies one could use to get there appetite up, ive heard of the shoe box method but i dont wanna leave the mouse in there too long, they'll eat my snakes if their not hungry.

A couple of things...

Snakes do not "get mad" at their food and decide to eat it. Snakes only eat when they are hungry, so if they are eating mice, I would not feed them quail for any reason! I have an adult male dum who only eats f/t chicks (and yes he digests the beak and feet fine...not sure where that fact comes from). It is a royal pain in the butt to buy f/t chicks from specialty dealers! Young dums are difficult to feed sometimes, I wouldn't worry about them unless they begin to lose weight!
