Eucalyptus mulch

survey33 Oct 18, 2006 08:32 PM

Anybody ever tried Eucalyptus mulch? I have used Cypress mulch for years with good results, but recently saw Eucalyptus. I'd like to use it, particularly in baby racks, because it is cut finer with fewer big chips.

Thanks, Dave

Not mulch, but I did use a Eucalyptus based substrate for my Australian Water Python when I had it. Gave off a nice scent when misted. Though now, I don't know if there were oils that were bad. I presume that since I had an Australian species, it wouldn't be affected by it. You may want to look into any possible toxicity.

I'd be careful, I think the koala's get loaded from the stuff. Seriously, they fall out of the trees sometimes from eating too much. This link says there are over 500 varieties, and the koalas only eat a few. How do you know from which variety the mulch is made? I wonder if you can smoke it? I'm sure some Aussie has tried. LOL

the oil makes it water repellent, it looks like it might work, but is actually horrible.
