need help with non feeders

ecoguard_79 Oct 18, 2006 09:50 PM

ok so i just bought 3 nonfeeder corns from a breeder, and i wanted to get some feeding suggestions from people who have most likely faced this problem as well

i got them yesterday so far they have had live pinky mice, dead pinky mice, and one with its skull opened.
i have heard of scenting with lizard blood, but i dont want to sacrifice an anole unless i have to, any other suggestions?

sorry didnt read the posts first, as for scenting with a lizard, i was told to put lizard blood on the pikey, is this what you mean by scenting it? or is there a way that doesnt require hurting an anole

and ill try the tuna tomorrow

adamjeffery Oct 18, 2006 11:23 PM

their are many tricks out their but some work for some and some dont. first off let me say that you should let the snakes acclimate for about a week. then try feeding them individually in deli cups. tuna scenting has never worked for me, neither has chicken. ive had best results with useing nasty stanky bedding from a mouse cage and letting a live pink wallow in it for about an hour and then leaving the pink in with the snake in a delicup over night. you can also try pink hampsters, gerbils or native mice(carefull could transfer disease) but i have had the best luck with time after some time most will eat but some just dont.

i figured that leaving them for a week would be a good idea, but i was nervous about them being too weak, they have only had one meal (force-fed pinkies)
as it is, i tried to rub them on my anole, he bit one of the pinks on the head, then urinated, which i promptly wiped on my pinkie as well. i havent seen any feeding behavior yet,
i also caught 5 baby anoles at work today, one snake seems very interested in the little lizards running around, but still no luck 2 hrs later
i guess waiting might be a good idea,i just figured i would try, and of course ask those with more experience at how to deal with the problem

have any of you guys heard good or bad about the ivory or wiindex methoods, i am a bit nervous about it

adamjeffery Oct 19, 2006 10:12 PM

from useing windex as i can see no helpful use of applying a poison to your snakes food. would you eat food that had been sprayed with windex?
i have thought about trying the ivory soap but have yet to do so, as long as all residue is gone i can see no harm. some say it works some have not had any luck. but no windex here ever

I will be trying the ivory soap thing tomorrow but I would definitely steer clear from using something toxic such as windex.

Try scenting the f/t pinks with a f/t adult mouse. Pinks don't have much of a smell on their own. As far as the anole, I once read where someone got the anole to bite on a pink mouse and somehow the "saliva" from inside the anoles mouth triggered the baby corn to eat the pink. I've never tried that myself though.

Though a serious question, I actually almost spat coffee on my screen when reading this. It seemed a bit morbid to scrub a live pink with soap and water, but...I suppose that's not quite as bad as it's final fate.

In theory, you could do that, but we generally stick to f/t food for our snakes. So the option hasn't really come up for us.

So I take it that you have never brained a live pink? It is not fun, but I just had to brain 5 last night for my non feeders. It worked on all 5 of them.

FUNNY you say something about braining... i brained some f/t lastnight for my new clutch of 6 and the non-feeders from before (also 6) and after all this time of forcefeeding 2 of the 6 decided to eat brained f/t!!!! and 3 of the new clutch... which i thought was weird that the newest clutch wouldnt eat their first time around and it was exactly 7 days after they all shed... but my first clutch all but 1 ate 3 days after shed.... is that weird, or just me???

Two things. One is housing. None feeders I have had fed much faster and better when I gave them a layer of an inch or two of Carefresh (recycled paper fluff hamster bedding) to live in.
Also, gruesome...but works....beheaded fresh pinky in a deli cup. Bloody, but I have never had a snake refuse it.

ok i managed to get my hands on 6 hatchling anoles at work, put 5 in with my snakes, i am down to 3, but dont know which ones ate.
i have tried ft and live pinkies scented with anoles, 2 luve by rubbing them against the anole, and getting it to bite them, 1 by just rubbing them against it. i also used anole urine on 1 ft, and did an ivory wash on another, no luck yet, but i got live pinks today.
the first thing i tried was a brained ft pink, but i will have to try decapitation next time
the anoles are out of the cage being fattened up by power fed crix before going back in

i have yet to try tuna juice, and i wont try windex just because the active cleaning ingredient is amonia, and it can absorb into the skin and soft tissues, causing a toxic situation for my babies

phflame Oct 21, 2006 10:26 PM

Keeping them in a group setting can stress them out, which might be contributing to the feeding problem. If you absolutely cannot separate them, at least feed them separately. Put them into a small brown paper bag with their pinkies, fold down the top (watch the tail of the snake!), and tape it shut. Then put the bag into their tank for extra safekeeping.

the breeder had tred that and it was ineffective,

on a lighter note, one ate on its own, one ate after a scented pinkie was rubbed on its snout. so 1 left to go
