Red-sided vs California Red-sided?

Antioch Oct 20, 2006 08:29 AM

How do you ID a red-sided garter to determine whether it is a red-sided or a California Red-sided?

I have a pair of 05 californians (infernalis) from Loren Zuck. I think he got them from Casey Lazik. Where ever they came from - they are fantastic looking garters.
I would suggest going to Scott Felzers sire. I think it is actually in the begging of this forum - he sponsers it.

Here's my female...

Steve,
Congratulations on the purchase of these fine snakes. I actually considered buying the same pair, but I contacted Casey Lasik who told me he doesn't (and didn't) sell garters. This misrepresentation scared me away from the purchase because I didn't know what I'd actually receive. It looks like you got some fine snakes, though. I'm glad it worked out for you.

I'm no expert - far from it - but if I had to guess, I'd say Oregon red spotted.
Good looking one at that

That is an Oregon red spotted garter. CA red siders have blue tinted stripes. REd sided garters have yellow stripes. Check out Scott Felzer's site www.albinogartersnake.com and www.donsgartersnakes.com for pics of each.

Infernalis are pretty neat little snakes. Can't wait till mine grow up and reproduce.
