determining sex

can someone with lots of experience describe in detail how to "pop" snakes to determine sexes. any photos would also be appreciated.

i dont know if i can say this legally, but cornutopia.com kathy love has a video of how to pop and probe.

The above answer pointing to cornutopia is the best for getting started, but have somebody show you firsthand too.

I’ve got a crazy question. I can pretty easily pop a “snakeling” and have no problem probing. Not a newbie at either. But I have never dissected a snake or anything and not into the anatomy and all that. That being said, when you pop a male you are inverting the hemipenis? It only comes out like a little tube. When you probe a male though, it goes in there way beyond the length of the thing that pops out? What exactly is the reason the probe goes so far in the male? Is the thing inverted that far? Is only the end popped out or something?

i know the hemi are stretchy so when they are probed its stretchy feeling....and can probe deeper than it really is. a female has nothing there so its a "thud" like stop.
