Questions about tail loss

mkco79 Oct 21, 2006 12:22 AM

I dropped one of my geckos hides when trying to remove him to clean the tank and it caught his tail after a very traumatic hour or so for both of us I'm sure hes gonna loose part of his tail it looks like its seperating the questions are:
1) how long should it take to actually lose it?
2) besides making sure the tank is totally clean feeding him extra gutloaded food (to make up for fat loss) and watching for infection is there anything else I should be doing for him?
Thank you! I'm really worried about this little guy We rescued him because he hadn't been taken care of and now I go and drop his house on him...

Way to go.

No, just kidding. Just make sure you change the water every day and use sterile bedding. Also, make sure it eats, after my friend's leo's tail got caught between a hide and the wall, he didn't eat for about a month, nearly died, they had it on gecko IV and everything.

It was wierd.

The tail may not come off the rest of the way. It could just be a parcial seperation of the tail, and could heal up with no issues. If it is more than half way off it could grown another tail out of the broken area, so it would looked like a forked tail. Just make sure it's clean, and the viv is complete free off loose substrate. I would also not feed crix at this time without taking non eaten ones out right away, as they could mess with an open wound.

using paper towel as substrate untill it heals will help prevent infection. -phillip

You can also use triple antibiotic ointment on it. It works wonders on cuts etc. Time will tell on the tail, and I'm sure you're horrified by the experience. Best thing to do now is work on healing it, and do what you can for it. Animals are good at bouncing back and dealing with these things, a LOT better than us. They just adjust to what happens and go on.
I have a dog who went blind from diabetes and most of the time you'd think he can see. He learned his way around, sometimes going slow, and is seemingly as happy as he always was.
Best of luck, I'll keep it in my prayer (yes even an animal, we are all God's creatures.) And keep us posted.

well its been almost two days and it started to seperate about 1/4 the way across but doesn't seem to have changed much since the day it happened hes still a little leary of us right now( not that I blame him) but he is still eating like the pig he is and still seems to be pretty active he however was not very happy with the paper towels I took out one of his rock hides and replaced it with a rubermaid one for the cool side and he doesn't like it much but its way easier to keep clean I also took out the moss from his wet hide and put paper towels in it and soaked them down I'm hoping this will help us keep him clean since some of the moss had stuck into the wound (eww!) thanks forthe help and we'll keep you posted...(the pic is pre-rock incident) the break is about half way down his tail

Keep the Neosporin (triple antibiotic ointment) on it for a few more days at least. Then Time will tell. The tail may not drop and it'll be fine. Well it will be fine anyway. Keeping his appetite is a real good sign, it shows the stress hasn't been too bad for him. Count your blessings he'll be fine.
Please do let us know how it's going.

Hope he gets better soon. Sounds like you're doing the right things but it wouldn't surprise me if he drops it. I would watch very carefully for infection. It may actually be healthier for him to drop it than to get gangrene. Not sure if they drop tails on their own in such cases.
