Honduran is shedding already

drapert Oct 21, 2006 08:05 AM

I just got her a couple weeks ago. I fed her twice, and she's going to shed already. I can't believe it.

I was curious to know, however, do snakes shed regularly because their "clothes wear out" or do they just get too big and have to "wear a bigger size". Or is it simply just changing clothes for the new season?

Enquiring minds.

I'm off to get some spahgnum to help with the humidity in her enclosure as suggested by the list, but was just wondering about how often I should expect her to shed in a year.

Thanks

It is because for hatchlings, they are growing and need new skin to house the growing body. Unlike my dog that sheds its summer coat for winter coat, young snakes will shed only because they are growing. For adults especially the old ones, they still grow but very unnoticeable, that is why they don't shed that much... at least that's what I've been told by a zookeeper a few years ago as far as the adults are concerned.
