hondurans and tempature requirements

gtk4158a Oct 21, 2006 09:00 AM

I have been keeping hondurans for over 1 year now.I have raised 3 tangerine albinos from hatchlings and in my opinion, they have done well, a year plus later all 3 are in the 4 foot range.I have raised them in critter keepers,5.5 gallons when small and then 15 gallon size when intermediate size snakes and then 30 gallon breeder size when they, in my opinion, outgrew the 15 gallon size. i use the apropriate size "under tank heat pads in all my tanks on the hot end, with a "cool" zone on the other side, i use 1 & 1/2 inches of "carefresh".plenty of hides on both ends.My snakes eat like monsters. My question is that i have never seen them on the hotter side of their cages.ambient temp is around 80 degrees. Is the tempature too hot?
once again my snakes seem to be thriving but i notice that they never are in the hotter side of their ntanks and even after feeding they stay on the cool end. Also i use modest heat emitters on the hot end. 60 watts on the 15 gallons and 100 watts on the 30 gallon breeders all placed over the "hot" end of each tank.My snakes are extremly pretty,In my opinion and eat great for me. should i turn off the heat admitters? They, once again stay on the cool end of their enclosures.I need opinions and i guess that my feelings are " if it aint broke, dont fix it" and that better a bit too warm then too cold...thanks

for instance, do you put a reliable, accurate thermometer directly over the hot spot substrate or are you measuring the temps on the side of the tank? I would put a thermometer on the bottom of the tank (if the snake can actually burrow through the substrate) to get a good reading. I would recommend using a digital thermometer or a temperature gun to get a good reading.
