Breaking the CBB rules - a bad lesson

5rings Oct 21, 2006 01:01 PM

Hey all, long time no post. I am rebuilding my collection and the new improved web site should be back up in a few days. I've got some nice animals and will post a few when time permits.

I just broke my own rule and it looks like I will pay for it. I've had a yellow project going for a few years and got excited when I saw to big and unique yellow female posted on KS. I have a pretty firm rule against buying WC as my bad experiences with such have FAR outweighed my good experiences. Well, my eyes go the better of my brains and I bought a LT WC female with patternless peach colored sides and a huge dorsal stripe. She is gorgeous! Now for the lesson - again.

She arrived badly dehydrated with an old shed stuck to her. She is the thinnnest blood python I have ever seen, even when comparing recently imported WC. At over 6 feet she cant weigh more than 15 lbs. I havent had the stomach to actually weigh her. I cant get her to even lift her head to look at food. We have rehydrated her and kept her quiet and warm. The requisite vet trip yielded nothing but malaise and malnutrition. We will throw the kitchen sink at her in terms of care but I have serious doubts that she will survive.

On my web site I repeatedly preach the value of buying CBB animals from reputable people. What on Earth prompted me to break that rule? I dont know, but I hope my folly helps convince you to follow MY rules.

Happy snakin

I know what snake your talking about Steve, and believe me I almost bought it as well! There are just sometimes when a WC just looks that good that it's worth the risk and I belive this is one of those cases. Unfortunately you got the short end of the stick. I know you know what your doing and will do whatever you can for the animal. A friendly call to the seller wouldn't hurt either, just to see what was going on with the animal if you know what I mean. I wish you the best of luck with her. It really is a shame when animals get treated like that, it makes me sick. Stick around awhile.

Hey Rich,

How have you been? I was just thinking of you while I was looking at some old snake pix. Did you produce any Sarawaks this year? I'm not in the market but I sure hope somebody is keeping that spark alive.

I thought I was down and out for good there for a while but I am regaining some of my collection (ouch on the new WC)and things are going pretty well here at home. Good to be back.

My male seemed to be a bit young or immature. I hope he will work for me this year. He has to girls to choose from so not sure why he doesn't want to have fun?
