Most people agree that probing is dangerous and can be inconclusive in monitors. They are very powerful and will fight not to have something rammed up in them. Those characteristics and behaviors from treemonitors work pretty well except the lower jaw angle seems to only work in the prasinus complex. the tall nares on males seems to hold up along with the beefy heads on males. watching for eversions when they defecate or get really grumpy w/ handling works. in the end, you'll find out with time (and eggs or not) if you have a female. females will lay infertiles when kept correctly. in fact, my first Argus hatchling was "probed" at an expo by the experts as a male....guess what....a year later she laid a clutch of 7 eggs in a big rock cave in her enclosure. shows the worth of probing, eh? you'd have to know the depth differences of the hemipenal pocket vs a hemiclitoral and i bet it's different in every species of monitor.
