New ATB cage in progress

jasonmattes Oct 21, 2006 07:31 PM

I'm building this for my ATB. Its 23x23x36. Its made of 1/2" poplar ply and the inside is going to be lined with 1/4" plexi (got a bunch for free).
I'm probobly going to get an RHP for it for heat.

Looks good so far. I might suggest not using the 1/4" plexi on the inside though. You can get 2'x3' sheets of 1/8" plexi for under 5 bucks each from most Ace hardware stores. That way you can keep the 1/4" to use for other projects.

I had thought about that but the plexi I have was used on top of desks at work and is fairly scratched up. I'll probobly paint one side of it either white or black.

I like the size and proportion of the cage. It looks great.

Aren't you worried the combo of 1/2" ply and 1/4" acrylic is going to be heavy?

If it were me and I had a source of free but scratched acrylic, I think I'd cut large squares out of each panel of plywood, except for maybe the top. I'd also have the acrylic etched since it's already scratched. Then just laminate it over the plywood and you'd have sort of a face frame look with etched glass.

However, I really like the grain on that back panel of poplar plywood and would be inclinded to try to keep it as part of the cage background. Maybe pick your least scratched piece of acrylic for that.

I'm not worried about the weight. By the time I dump a bunch of dirt in the bottom and ad a decent tree the weight of the building materials wont matter much I think.
Thanks for the comments.
I havnt decided what I want to do for lighting so if you guys have any suggestions I'd be glad to here them.
I'd like to get away from the big utility light sitting on top if I could.

I'm getting ready to build some cages that will be full of dirt, etc. and am also not that worried about weight. I can relate.

What wood did you use for the face frame? Also, how much is the poplar ply in your area?

You might start a separate thread for lighting. I'm sure you have whole lot of choices for use inside of the cage, including under cabinet lighting.

The face frame is poplar plywood...just leftovers from the cage.
The sheet of poplar cost 22.50.

cage looks great; question - what's the best way to attach the plexi to the wood ? A particular glue/sealer, and/or screws, or what ?

jasonmattes Oct 22, 2006 11:20 PM

I'll probobly screw it down if needed. If it doesnt sag I'll just leave it. All the corners are going to be sealed with silicone.
