Newbie adopting today....lots of Q's

BJinWI Oct 22, 2006 09:33 AM

I MAY be adopting 2 3-toed box turtles today from a local humane society. I have been reading as much as possible to be sure if they come to my home they will have everything the will need. First off, I live in WI so outdoor living is not possible in the winter, so I need to be sure my indoor inclosure is up to par. They will come with a 40gal tank from the HS. That will have to do for a short period until I make their new home. Now, I know it is comming close to hibernation time for these guys. Once they are comfortable here and eating should I start preparing them for hibernation right away or should I try to wait till Mid Nov to make sure they are healthy. I will be taking them to my vet (where I take all my creatures, furry, scaley and feathery)Also, is a non heated basement cool enough for them to hibernate?
These are just a couple q's I couldn't find answers to. Thanks for your help and if they come home with me i am sure i will have plenty more brain picking to do.
BJ

I'm a big believer in not hibernating them the first year if you don't know what the past history is.
Coming from a humane society.. were they taken away from people who neglected them or were they given to the society by people who neglected them?
Those would be my first questions.
It's a good thing that you plan to have them examined by a vet right away once you get them. That should help give you a starting point on what to do with them after they arrive.
