Timor Monitor

kellybee Oct 22, 2006 10:24 AM

Hi,

Today I bought a Timor for my partner, he has been a big fan for a very long time, and after much debate we decided that the empty 7ft tank at the top of our stacking system would make an ideal home for one, maybe a pair. We havent had much luck in finding them, but today we bought a 2 year old male, apparently probed, and captive bred. Interestingly, he is not very timid, and has spent all afternoon roaming his new tank, licking everything in sight.

We really did our research before buying, but I've found that when looking through the archives on here all people seem to want to know is how to "tame" timors. What is this all about? Why would anyone want to pet them? Surely they should have bought a puppy, lol.

Anyway, I was wondering if there is anyone out there that OWNS or HAS owned a Timor or more than one, that can tell me about their experiences in owning them? We're totally made up with our new dude, but I'm interested in personal experience with them, rather than just sticking to the Care sheets floating around on the internet.

Also, its a really big vivarium (7ft long, 2ft deep), I was wondering if we wanted at a later date to introduce a second Timor is this likely to be a problem, as there doesnt seem to be much information on this subject available on the internet.

Thanks!
Kelly

although those cages look nice, they can't hold enought dirt. a major part of a monitors life involves burrowing. i wouldn't use the word "ideal" something to think about

cheers

In the back half of the tank there is a lip that runs the entire length, and a foot deep, it holds the substrate for him to dig in, and the front portion is lower, so that he can run around etc, it was not finished when the photo was taken.

Of all of the monitors that I have owned over the years, I have observed the least amount of digging from the timors. Mine spent the majority of their time in a hide box situated in a tree. They spend a lot of time climbing. Again this is only my experience, and I think it is important to tell you that I have never received viable eggs from my timors.

Hope this helps,
Jim

I like your attitude. It does seem like most of the Timor questions are about handling/taming. I've never been that interested in grabbing and holding my monitors and Timors are definitely not a great choice if that is what you're into.

Probing is not a reliable or safe method for determining the sex of a monitor. It is very unlikely that your Timor is CBB. Unless you have seen pics of the animal hatching it would be safe to assume that it was wild caught.

If you want to post pics of the monitor we can try to guess at it's sex. If you post some pics of the set-up we can critique it.

Cheers

I was afraid of that, my other half pulled faces when she said it was probed, but I forgot to ask him why he did that since.

I havent taken any photos of him yet, he hasn't had time to settle in, so I'll spare him the old "bright flash in face = frightened lizard" experience for when he's a bit more comfy, and will gladly take photos of the set-up for you to see at the same time.
