Do iguanas commit suicide?

Solaris16 Oct 22, 2006 02:36 PM

Hey Everyone,

It's been a long time since I've posted here, and my iguana and I have been struggling with really weird, currently undiagnosed illness for almost 5 months now, which I won't get into details about.

However, her personality/attitude etc are the same as always and she is eating/pooping/appearing happy.

This morning she took a jump and nose dive off of her 5 foot shelf in her enclosure, landing right on her nose. She was extremely unresponsive right after (limp, not moving, crumpled up etc) ahd cut her mouth up. She started croc rolling a couple minutes afterward, wasn't breathing well, her face was white.

She seems fine now, eating, back to her usual temperament again.

It looked to me like she jumped on purpose, but she may have just really wanted out.

But my question is, has anyone ever heard of an iguana committing suicide? Is it possible that she knows she is unhealthy (even though she doesnt seem sick), and would kill herself?

I'm at a loss....please help. We're going back to the vet AGAIN for more tests early this week, but any input would be so appreciated.

Tho we humans often "humanize" our beloved pets, we cannot let it get out of hand. Iguans don't commit suicide. Suicide is a deep and extreme emotional act. Animals, especially reptiles, do not have that emotional part of the brain to lead them to it.
There are some mammals, such as dogs, apes, and lover birds, who do suffer "emotional traumas" and let themselves slowly go, usually through starvation.
But iguanas... dont think so.
