pine breeding size

simias Oct 22, 2006 05:47 PM

I have a group of P. ruthveni; several females of breeding age (4 yrs, 5'), and a couple of same-sized males.

I also have a smaller, younger (2.5 yr old) male -is there any reason not to brumate and breed him too ? Being male there is no isue of egg-binding, etc

I don't see why not, go ahead and brumate him as well. This is not scientific by any stretch, but up to this time, all of my successful clutches have been from smaller males bred to larger females (smaller = mass). I have one larger male that the females do not like to mate with. I do not purposefully keep the males smaller, that is just how it has been, and this year most males have eclipsed females in size. So next year it will be interesting to see how they do.
