not eating

skinkgirl Oct 22, 2006 06:45 PM

I have a schneider's skink and I always find myself gettig worried about him during the winter. I know it's normal for them to eat less and stay burried more during the cold weather but my lizard seems to eat nothing. I offer him crickets, fruit, dried insects, cat food etc. and he won't eat anything. It's still only fall and although i live in michgan and it is very cold at this point, it still seems like he shouldn't be in full-on winter mode. Is it normal for my skink to refuse all food? If not how can I get him to eat? Thanks in advance.

also, about how warm should his terrarium stay during the colder months?

You should typically only drop temperatures 5- 10 degrees, but continue to provide a warmed basking area or heat pad. I am not especially "well read" when it comes to skinks, but this is what i do for my chameleons and my other lizards. If he hasn't eaten for a couple weeks, and is losing weight, you should take him to a herp qualified vet. Is it possible he is on a hunger- strike?

I'm sorry I know this is REALY delayed but I haven't been on here. I haven't noticed him getting skinnier, but I don't realy know if you can without weighing a lizard. What do you mean by hinger-strike?
