OK people...soap works!!!!!!!!

draybar Oct 22, 2006 08:21 PM

I had read the post mentioned below about washing pinkies with ivory soap, rinsing them thoroughly and trying that with non-feeders.
The two non-feeders that I have left, one born in June and one in July had never eaten on thier own. I have been force feeding them a pinkie head each week.
I didn't have ivory so I used dial. Basic dial bathroom soap.
I washed the pinkies with the dial, rinsed them thoroughly and wraped them in a paper towel separate from all the other feeder mice.
I placed these in brand new deli cups, added the snakes and placed them on a dark shelf and went to feed everyone else.
When I was finished with all the feedings I went back and checked on the two non feeders........THEY ATE!!!!!
Try it!!!!

If lead paint is so deadly why do they make it so delicious?

That is always my first course of action. Most of my snakes will start right away on FT. The handful that don't will almost always go for the washed ones. I almost never have to go buy live pinks since I started washing them. Most of the time you don't even need the soap, especially after the first time. I'm paranoid about tehm eating too much soap, but even just a quick rinse will get rid of most of the decayed smell which is I think what they don't like.

Congrats. I have heard of the soap trick for some time. But to rescent them. Well, I have a male baby cream that is driving me nuts. I will try it on Thursday, if my old brain remembers. And I will let you know.

Did you use live or F/T?

I have access to bought. But f/t seens easier.

I used frozen thawed.
I thawed them out and then washed them with the dial and rinsed them thoroughly.
I also made sure to put them in brand new deli cups.
I have all my hatchling feeding cups numbered which makes it much easier keeping track of who goes where so I thought it would be a good idea to use new deli cups to avoid the possibility of odors from previous feeding attempts.
well all I can say is the comination worked.

dove might be a little perfumey (if thats a word) but if you rinse thoroughly I think the main idea is just to get the urine and feces smell eliminated.
tray a nice clean deli dish, too.

good luck and keep us posted.

I first heard of the 'Dove trick' back in 2001 for stubborn Green Tree Python hatchlings. My bud has been using the trick with GTPs since 1997.

I wonder who was crazy enough to come up with this 'remedy' first??

Congrats.

I'm wondering who came up with the remedy of dipping pinky mice into tuna fish water to entice eastern hognoses to eat. I have one eastern that flat out refuses to eat pinkies until they have been dipped in tuna water.

I have used and recommended tuna fish water.
Strange that it works, but I have had success with it and so have others.
I would hate to think someone was eating tuna while preparing mice and dropped a pinkie in their tuna and thought, "hmm I wonder if the snake will like that?"
Then gave the pinkie to their snake and finished their tuna...lol

I'm always looking for new possiblities. Corns and balls are so different in the way they eat. I wish balls were as easy as corns to feed...

My bp wouldn't eat for 3 months when we got him. What eventually worked was just decapitating a rat pink. He ate the head and after doing that twice he never looked back. Actually... he was quite the garbage disposal after that!

That's what I was thinking.. how did it come about lol. It's a good thing I am on a semi-diet so I am eating tuna once a week anyway. Tomorrow I am gonna try to see if he prefers fresh tuna water or if some frozen tuna water will work just as well for scenting. Could be worse, he could be like my little eastern king who likes to switch her feeding patterns every couple weeks. I just about gagged when she went through a 2 week period of wanting only 'well ripened' pinkies... the mess the next day with guts smeared everywhere after a pinky would pop from having sat out 24 hours in the cage was a bit much even for me lol.
