are red tail boas a good first boa?

RobertIIII Oct 22, 2006 08:48 PM

Hi all,I am interested in possibly getting a boa. I have had or have kingsnakes, ratsnakes and a pine snake. Now I do not know too much about boas so forgive me for being nieve in my questions. hence that is why I am here. Was just wondering how are boas as pets? because I am not looking to breed, just looking for a "family" pet. also how are thier personalities? how big do they get? are males or females bigger? do male or females make a better pet in temperament wise? anything else you all think I should know? any help is greatlly appreciated

Some of the smaller morphs of the Boa constrictor make pretty good starter snakes. However, some of the southern morphs of this species do not make good starters. They get too large (over 12 feet in females) and aren't as docile as more northerly forms. Frequently, the larger, less docile morphs are the most colorful.

If you can get a Colombian Red-tailed Boa (most of which aren't from Colombia, BTW), they generally stay under 7 feet.

Males are smaller than females.

Post this on the boa constrictor forum and see what the people there who have larger collections of boas have to say.

Realize even a small morph of the boa constrictor is a fairly large snake. A 6 foot boa is a lot bigger than a 6 foot ratsnake and requires a larger cage and larger food items. This makes them more expensive to house and feed.

she is just a plain ol' Columbian and she is the mellowest snake I own.She never hides away in her cage(except during a shed) like my BP(who never comes out) or my corn does. She likes to sit and prop her head on the rim of the cage and watch the world go by..I got her at a petstore when she was 6mnths old, she was a return. She had previously been owned by a college student who could no longer keep her.He must have handled her quite often because she had a great attitude right from the start. She is well over six feet now and just under 3 years, her strength never fails to impress me.Ive learned to let her ride around my shoulder and arm rather then my neck.
I know all boas dont have the same personality but I would say she is my favorite snake.
