10/22 Litter of BRBs

Jeff Clark Oct 23, 2006 01:27 AM

...I was checking on the snakes at 2:15 sunday morning and found that one of my BRBs was laying her litter. When I first checked there were 4 slugs and one premature and one stillborn and one healthy baby. As I watched she laid the rest of the litter which had more slugs and all the live babies born outside the membranes. I had to tap some of them several times to get them moving and breathing but they did come around. I imagine if I had not been there when they were born several of them would have died and I would have identified them as stillborn when I did find them. I have in the past seen high numbers of babies born outside the membranes and stillborns in litters which are high in slugs like this one. Final count was 6 live healthy babies, one premature, one fullterm stillborn and 14 slugs. The mother of this litter was born here in 2000. She is 5 feet nine inches long and weighed 5.3 pounds in july. She laid a good litter with lots of bright orange babies last year. These babies look pretty nice and I will post PICs of them after they shed. They ranged from 28 to 35 grams. Litters like this are disappointing. I had been expecting this litter for several weeks and the female looked like she was carrying a large litter of good babies. I have one more female that was looking very gravid a few weeks ago but recently is not looking so gravid.

do you think you would get better results with biennial breeding instead of yearly?

Frank,
....Possibly yes. Some of my females do not put on enough weight in the off season and do get a year off because of it. On the other hand, I have had a few females that produced good litters for several years in a row.

Sorry the clutch wasn't much bigger but the female is really nice looking. The babies should be hot. Got your numbers, thanks.

Was there ever any question that it all depends on the female???
