Plant Prep

darknessheir Oct 23, 2006 02:22 AM

I have 2 plants for my new tank and wanted to know how you all prep them to go in the tank? I have a plant in my cresteds tank and i washed off all the soil that it was in and replanted it in peat moss, now that it is winter i dont really want to wash it off outside or in my sink. Are the little white bead that come in the soil fertilizer, perlite or what?(And are they harmfull?) Can I put rocks on the soil that the plants came in so the gecko cant get to the soil? Thanks Brice

The reason to wash the soil and leaves of the plant is to remove pesticides and other toxic substances. The little white beads I think are perlite and can be harmful if swollowed. Depending on the type of plant and how cold it is, you may be able to shake all the dirt off the roots inside then rinse it off with warm water outside (put the warm water in a bucket or plastic rubbermaid and either dip the roots into the water and swish it around till clean, or pour over the roots.)
