new gecko

slimforte Oct 23, 2006 11:31 AM

this is my new gecko named Nibbles. it got that name today cuz the little SOB kept biting me when i was trying to get it out of the tank to clean. will it become less apt to bite as it gets bigger. also what are the chances that it will stay spottless as it gets older.

I was hoping my baby would stay spotless, but they're now developing.

It seems unless you have a patternless, they develop the spots no matter what. :

Yes, as s/he gets older, the biting will most likely subside. Probably just nervous and stressed from the move to a new environment, plus the little babies are sometimes more prone to defensive biting. I'd say give him/her a week or so to calm down, then start just putting your hand down on the floor of the terrarium to give him/her a chance to get used to you. Eventually you'll get licked, then climbed on, and from there on out you will likely have a very tame gecko...

It is important to remeber that they each have their own personalities. One of mine was extremely fiesty as a baby and even with regular handling he has still been a pain in the butt. He's now 44 grams and is still as cranky as he was as a baby (the biting has stopped though). He has been known to jump from my hands (once he jumped onto my face and scratched the poop out of me). He chirps in protest when he sees me. I think he's just a turd (but a lovable one of course). His "sister" was handled just as often and in the same manner and she is as tame as ever.

Right now he is marching around his cage and staring me down. It's pretty funny.

I love that they each have their own behaviors! It makes them much more fun.
