Opinions wanted on this product

LauraV Oct 23, 2006 11:36 AM

I was looking for possible new items to use against mites. I've been using Reptile Relief on all incoming animals, but wanted to consider other options. I miss Black Knight and refuse to use PAM. I know BK may be a bane to some folks, but one spray was all it ever took for me, no matter how many mites came in on an animal. I never had to reapply it.

I discovered this item this morning and wanted to get opinions on how its ingredients might effect a boid:

I've also heard that Nix and other commercially available lice treatments have the same ratio of mite-killing chemicals as other reptile-marketed mite treatments and work just as well for many times less cost.

I use sawyers insect repellent. same main ingredient as proventamite but only 5 bux a can at walmart or meijers. I have been using it for 5 years now with no ill effects and it is very effective.

you can buy it at Walmart for $3.84. Work so damn good. You use it just like PAM. I swear by it. I sell it my store for $13.99. I was actually told this by a couple of large breeders.

I use Black Flag. Its main ingredient (only 1 of 2) is permethrin which is the same active ingredient in
Provent-a-Mite. Prov a mite has .50% concentration and clearly works well. However, I dont feel fuzy inside when I spend $20 on a 12oz can. Black Flag is an outdoor wasp/pest spray that comes in a 16oz can, has a concentration of .200% (probably the same as .2%) permethrin and costs only $4. It has worked awsome for me. I had a sudden break out a few weeks ago and this stuff did the trick hands down. There a one or two other brands of the same stuff as Black Flag but I chose BF because it was less expensive. Pay close attention when chooseing a spray at the hardware store. If it has permethrin then chances are it will do a good job. Be sure that it doesnt have too many other chemicals if you dont know how theyll affect your animals. BF only has two and it works great. Aslo pay attention to the concentration of permethrin. Some sprays only contain concentrations in the hundreths place (.02 or .05% etc) Make sure it has at least .2% or better. IMO

The only product I will use is "Provent-A-Mite". I find the other store-bought products such as Repti-Relief do not work well. If you have an animal with mites, soak it in a mild soapy water container for a few hours and you will see all mites sink to the bottom.

PAM is a exact copy of the lice bedding sprays, you can match the labels word for word. PAM is the only one that is "Labeled" for reptile use. below is a link of all the products names available. I saw this on the boa forum years ago.

i buy equate brand at walmart when i go to shows i just spray a little in my cooler before i leave the show and a little in there tub before i put my new arrival away and have never had a problem.
