herping in TX

gretzkyrh4 Oct 23, 2006 12:57 PM

Hi,
I'll potentially be making a run out from az to dallas to visit my girlfriend this weekend and was curious if there is still any good herping to be done in TX this time of year.
I have the options of taking either 1-40 or I-10 on my way with I-10 adding about 1.5hrs to my trip. If anyone has any suggestions for areas that would be worth a stop off along either of these routes please let me know.

Thanks,
Chris

Its going to be really nice outside this weekend so if you come, you may be able to find something. I could point you to a good spot locally for copperheads and emory's ratsnakes if you want...Just shoot me an e-mail.

Well TX wasn't completely dead yet. I managed to come across a few dozen turtles (6 while driving), with the majority being red ears and a few others I am not sure of. Also, came across a few young bullfrogs while hiking during the day.
Never had a chance to get out in the evening and road cruise though, so my snakes were limited to what I saw on the long drive in and out. In all I spotted 5 snakes while buzzing along the highway at about 80mph, but could only safely stop to check out two. Both appeared to be relatively fresh DORs and were within about 10 miles of Memphis TX. The first was a juvenile bull and the second a Praire King. Makes me wish I had actually had some time to go out and see what I could find on the roads while not going along at high speeds.
