pied markers

magicalmorphs Oct 23, 2006 02:12 PM

I just recently bought a pair of het pieds and wanted to know what you guys look for as far as "markers"? I know there isn't anything concrete to look for, just wanted to get some opinions. The ones I bought aren't ringers , but they do have some great looking color to them. They have some heavy orange sides. The male also has a heavy mustache that none of my other normals have. Thanks in advance.

Do all het pieds have that belly pattern?

RandyRemington Oct 25, 2006 08:07 AM

Reportedly not. That's what makes it controversial, if they all had it pied would be considered co-dominant. While many hets seem to have the pied pattern starting on the belly but not working up onto the back like in a homozygous pied there are some that don't and some presumed normals that have similar patterns. Still, I believe this pattern is very common in het pieds, much more so than in normals so pied appears to be more than text book recessive, maybe “recessive with co-dominant leanings”.

Here is a normal. At least he was sold as a normal. Just like you were saying, he looks to me to have the same type of belly stripe as the one posted earlier.

Any idea of the source? With for sure het pied males being so cheap it's probably not worth breeding him but I know I've sold possible het pied males with very good markings to pet stores.

He was purchased at a show in Orlando. I can't remember the name of the people we bought him from.
