Piebald Cuban Rock Iguanas??

manny Oct 23, 2006 06:59 PM

I just subscribed to the IRCF and received thier Iguana Magazine. This issue shows a Cuban Rock Iguana from the population in Puerto Rico eating another smaller Cuban Rock Iguana. The wierd thing about it is that the one getting eaten looks to be piebald and the bigger ones appear to have white spotting. Has anyone here ever seen this before in Cyluras?

I'm pretty sure it has to do with inbreeding. Could you imagine a white Cyclura and it not being Albino? HHHmmmmm

These are not piebald. These animals were splashed with white paint for marking and tracking purposes during a study. I have seen the color versions of these pictures and can assure you it is paint.

Oh well. I wish they would have mentioned that the iguanas were marked. It sure looked interesting.

I saw that too, it first looked like scaring but then it was on the larger one too so I had no idea. Maybe the large female thought that was banana topping so she ate the poor little guy, it was a setup.

A banana split with whip cream on top... I would have eaten it too just thinking about it. Lol

The pictures got me all excited. I was dreamiing of going to Puerto Rico to check it out.

Does anyone know if they are protected there since they are a non-native species?

I believe the PR population is protected, all the cyclura are at this point. There is talk of moving the nubila to another island as they are not native. The solution has run the gamut from destoying them to moving to leaving them. The ISG meeting is there is year and I would think it will be a topic brought up.
