A few of a some friends caiman enclosure

CDieter Oct 23, 2006 11:16 PM

One of the best caiman enclosures I have ever seen. Very well done by Austin's Davis family. Whats amazing is Drew the son loves salamanders while his Dad favors the crocs.

Obviously the caiman like their habitat as well.

A very nice enclosure indeed!

One thing I would be concerned about though (and I don't have a good sense of perspective with the full enclosure shot, less the caimans) is their ability to climb. I've seen 4' gators climb a 6' fence.

Question, what do they do in the winter on the cold days that even Austin gets periodically? Or is this a seasonal habitat?

Austin does get a few more cold days than we do here in Houston. If I remember correctly they heat the water and also on occasion pull the animals from the enclosure.

I know what I would do in the winter there. I'd cover it with greenhouse type material and run a passive solar heater into the pond. If necessary backed up by an electrical heater of some sort.

I have to tell you I haven't used solar before and I am VERY impressed with the results with even my rudimentary setup. Nothing like the furnace in the sky.
