Getting a BRB

wanderinglost Oct 24, 2006 12:14 PM

Hey guys, I have been keeping different lizards for a few years now, and recently I was a pet store that had a gorgeous BRB. It is by far the most beautiful snake I have ever seen. It has already been sold, but I was thinking at the next reptile show I go to, I might pick one up. I have never kept snakes before, but like i said before, I have been keeping different reptiles for a few years, I was just wondering If a BRB is a good starter snake, or If I would be better off with something different. Also, If I could get a link to a good reliable care sheet that would be great. Thanks guys,
-Dustin Cosby

This post will help you with care..

BRB's are sometimes refered to as a "medium" level snake instead of a starter level. I think the 2 big factors that come into play here are #1 their size and #2 their temp/humidity requirements. While not a big snake, they do get into the 6 foot range which can be a little overwhelming for some as a first snake, and especially with the young animals, humidity is very important.

That said, for someone willing to take the time and do their homework - then provide the animal what it needs, a rainbow can make for a very rewarding experience (first snake or 100th animal).

There is alot of other care information in the pages of the forum, take you time and read some of the older post - it will be time well spent.

I agree, they are absolutely beautiful snakes. And, it doesn't stop with their patterns or colors. Wait until you get one out into the sunlight. I don't see anything wrong with starting with a BRB. Like anything else, if you're willing to learn and prepare a habitat before you buy your pet, it will thrive.

Take a look at my website. I have a captive care page devoted to BRB's. I tried to be clear while going into detail about their requirements. Feel free to call or e-mail me if you have any questions about the information. Good luck,

Thanks Paul and Jeff,

I'm working on updating it now. I've got some nice babies to post up and have had some hot and heavy action between a couple of GTP's (keep your fingers crossed for me). I'd also really like to include a page on the natural history of BRB's. I can't find any journal articles on them though. I'm going to check Ross and Marzec's and Mattison's books for references.

Man, I could get so much done if I didn't have to go to my pesky job every day.
