Found thing on baby's cage

meme_cantu Oct 24, 2006 12:39 PM

Hi everyone

I jost bought 2 albino leopard geckos, they are weeks old I think. I have been giving them dusted crickets but I have never seen them eat. One has a normal body and tail but the other has a normal body and a tick tail, and I found this strange thing on his cage, several predigested( I think ) crickets i found on the floor. can someone tell me a clue of what this could be. Thanks

When you said tick, did you mean thick? In the case that you did, that is perfectly normal. Leopard geckos store fat in their tales, so fatter tails, about the size of their body, are a good sign that you're doing a decent job of husbandry. Now, if you really meant tick, i'm at a loss and we're going to need a picture.

As for the crickets..are you taking the crickets your geckos don't eat out after awhile? It's a bad idea to keep them in. Now, the predigested crickets..i've never heard of leos upchucking, but I guess it's possible. When my snakes have done it, they just get super mushy. Maybe your leopards are just passing the crickets without fully digesting their food?

So Sorry about my English, Im from Mexico and thanks for the reply . Sorry about the tick part, I meant tin. His body is fat, but his tail is very tin. About the crikets, I let them in the cage for 2 days and then take them out. and the crikets look like if they were vomited. Thanks

Vomited up crickets in my experience are a sign that the gecko is either sick (get it to a vet and figure out what's wrong) or stressed. Given that one of them has an overly thin tail, I would separate them, just to make sure they're both getting enough food - sometimes one will be stronger than the other and keep the weaker one from eating and/or stress the weaker one enough to make it lose its lunch. Also you'll then be able to be sure which one (if it's not both of them) is puking up crickets. Presuming that separating them doesn't help the thin one put on weight (hopfully noticeably so within a short period of time), I'd get them both to a vet ASAP. If one is sick, the other one probably is too, and a vet will be able to best advise you on how to help them.

I also recommend seperating them at least for now. I don't know what size crickets you are giving, they should be no longer than it's head and hafl as wide. If they are too big they can't swallow them. This could also be what you are seeing with the partially digested crickets.
If the crickets are too big and they are able to swallow them they will also come out the other end looking like that.
The one with the thin tail definitely needs to gain weight. You can try mealworms, waxworms, small superworms too. If they don't eat them within about 30 minutes there could be something wrong or they don't like what you gave them. If it's crickets definitely do not leave them in there because the crickets can bite your gecko trying to eat it. Either that or put some greens in there for the crickets to eat.
Let us know how they are doing, we're here to help.

Now you ment Thin*

That isnt a good thing. Healthy Leos have Plup tails. If the other one has a big tail, then watch them both. The one with a big tail may be keeping his cage mate from eating. Some leos may do this.

Make sure the leo with the thin tail is eating and he or she is also having a good amount of Calcium.

Good Luck

The following web site may be of help. It was to me when one of my geckos had taken ill. It has some information on the symptoms of vomiting and a list of some possible causes.

http://www.drgecko.com/vomit.htm

A reptile qualified vet might help to identify the problem or at least narrow down the possibilities. Could be worth the trip.

Hope this helps!

make sure the crickets are not bigger than the leos head. They will also vomit crickets if they are eating too much.
