keeping boas together

viperbitex Oct 24, 2006 01:13 PM

Hi, I have three female boas (central american, high pink col, and a 100% het albino col.) all in the same cage together and they seem to all get along and I've never ever had problem with them fighting or anything. I also just purchased a dh sunglow male for future breeding to the columbians. He has his own tank of course. My question, is; when they are all old enough, is it a good idea to just put the male is their tank?? I plan on separating the central from the columbians by then, but is it alright to have the male and two females together to breed, or should I have them all in separate cages when they are (hopefully!!) breeding?? Thanx!!

Even though many people do it successfully, housing snakes together is a major risk. Even when seperating the snakes to feed, upon placing them back in, there is much risk of rat smell still being on one of the snakes... leading to an attack and injury (possibly death).

I would suggest housing them all seperately A.S.A.P. When they are ready for breeding, put the male in with the appropriate female. I personally wouldnt house 1.2 together to breed... mainly due to the difficulty in seperating them all to feed. Secondly, I'm not sure how well that would work. Many believe the female boas need to be courted to stimulate ovulation and get other stuff in line. Will the male stick to the right female until the job is fully done, or will he just hop on whichever one he happens to land on? Dunno. Id nix out the extra problematic variables and just put 1.1 together for breeding.

It would be more likely that you would succeed in breeding if the male was paired with one female. That way he will work her till he is done, with two girls to choose from he may do a little with each, but not finish the task on either.

1.1 ratio is the best for boa breeding projects, or a 1.2 where one female is used one year, and the other the next. Personally, I have both types lined up for the future.
