Golden tree frogs

edgewise Oct 25, 2006 01:00 AM

I have three male golden frogs(Polypedates leucomystax). I am told that if I introduce a female in the mix they will be more active and vocal. Will this "sexual competion" stress the frogs out and shorten their lives? Is a 29 gallon tall laid vertically big enough for the four of them? Everyone is healthy and i don't want to jeopordize that just to try something new. Thanks in advance for the advice.

I would say if the three males are getting along well as they are I wouldn't change things. Adding a female would add both stress and competition and could be detrimental to the harmony you currently have.
If you are thinking of getting a female for breeding purposes I would keep her seperate and add a male in with her rather than the other way around.

I tend to agree with you, though I would rather hear people say "Hey, by all means, get more frogs." I'm not really interested in breeding, so without further input I'll probably just leave "well enough" alone. Thank you for the advice.

I agree. Although I may be purchasing some Draco lizards in pairs soon, I don't plan on breeding them. I'm not ready for that at least for a while. So I will be giving them seperate housing until if or when I decide to think about it again. After all, they have long enough lives so why rush it?!

I think it's decided then. Thank you for the advice.

if you introduce a female the males will fight over her and that could result in death for the weaker one or two. but if you only have one male and one female they should be fine together.

Mixing females and males won't stress the frogs. It is safe as long as they are all about the same size so none of them may be accidentally eaten. The males won't know if a female is around anyway. Both male and female frogs will emit a "protest" call when touched on the back by another frog or when amplexus is attempted, so a male will not know if its cage mate is male or female.
