This one is from Tim Gebhard's line of outcrossed thayeri. I couldn't be more pleased with how he has retained his delicate pattern.

The "retro's" are tops on my list, and that is a superb one. Congrats!

That is a very nice one. I like that unique pattern.

Very beautiful, the color scheme is put together so well. the retro are my favorites.

He's awesome. I love the retro look, and I love his split saddles.
Ken
They're not bad, just not my cup of tea. Isn't it great that one clutch can possibly please everybody?

In part, I think it's because this is what these animals look like in the wild, so it brings you a bit closer to the remote places where they live. I certainly like the gaudy colors of the line-bred animals, but seeing these wild-types (retro or earth-tone), especially if you look at them up close, gives you a nice appreciation for how much is going on with color and pattern, much of it subtle. Here's what is likely a half-brother (or perhaps a sib) to Tony's animal.

And, here's a spot not far from where the mother of these animals was collected:

Cheers,
Bob
I have seen pics of a couple wild caught (wild run over) MSP that were as bright as any line bred ones. Though the “retro” ones may be more representative of wild stocks, I also believe there are some exceptional wild animals out there. The line-bred ones represent the extreme (still more to come?) but the color was there to start with. Plus, they are more of a human challenge; well, maybe not. As I said, I like them all, I do appreciate the finer points of pattern/markings but I can appreciate that in any color (lol). I’m a simpleton, I like purty colors.
Got any more "wild" shots?
Any more info on the research into mexicana taxonomy? Anyone? I don't know why (especially since I'm not that bright) but I love reading about it.

Bob, thanks for the photo's I love habitat photo's.
I love all colors of thayeri but the retro's fascinate me, there are never 2 a like, I guess i like to think that this is what i would be seeing in mexico so I lean more towards the retro.
thanks

Now that's one mighty fine looking milksnake phase thayeri right there Michelle.
This is also why I like the wild-type thayeri as much as I do; they get me a little closer to the real deal. Bob also hit a nail square on the head when he mentioned close attention to the finer details. I notice all of that. And it sure is exciting to be able to see the full spectrum right before our eyes! The extremely well refined that I also admire so much, and the normal-retro-wild-types all in one place.
With me it's pretty simple; I have an honest appreciation for the animal itself in addition to all it is capable of with color and pattern. As long as it's l.m. thayeri, it's all good with me!

'06 retro wild-type female...

Here are a few retro females of mine. I like the line bred guys too, but there is a subtle beauty to the earth tones these gals have.

Nice snake Tony. I'm not up on the whole retro thing (can one be up on retro?
) but know what I like.
What ever became of the term "buckskin" when describing some thayeri?
Must they be "leonis" phased to qualify as retro????
I remember some time ago the thayeri we'd see that were not leonis, would look much like mex-mex. Lots of gray. The babies would always "gray up" it seemed too. They would hatch out real bright and as they matured, whites and yellows would take on a gray tone.
Here's an old milksnake phase from Gary Sipperly's stock...geesh maybe a '95 hatch?

I'd like to know a little more about this snake. Is it male or female? Did you get it directly from Gary? Do you have any others from him?
Aaron, I got this male and a very similar snake from Gary at one of the NRBE shows when it was in Orlando. Actually my son got the pair for his b'day and I've since inherited them. Well, the female was a bit lighter and sort of "pinkish" rather than red and has since died. Anyway, the one in the pic is a big ol' male that hasn't had a female in a year. He'll have to come out of retirement next season. He's a really nice snake.
