Picky Breeder?

senorsnake Oct 25, 2006 11:52 AM

I've heard of females being picky about the males they will breed with, but what about the other way around?

We tried our DH sunglow male in with our 100% het and he shows very little interest, so to mix things up we put him in with our 50% het... and he went to courting right away. When put back with the other girl he again shows no interest. Is there any way to spark his interest in the other girl? Obviously we'd rather breed him to the 100% het than the 50%.

I have the same problem with my motley male, he will breed any of my normals, but does not like the hypos, albinos etc. I have tried to trick him by putting two girls together, and pulling out the normal, but so far no luck. Craig

try putting another male in with them. Making the ratio 2.1. Sometimes putting another male in can spark the dominance to kick in and get him to breed. However, it could backfire and the wrong male could end up fathering the litter. In my opinion, I would use a much smaller male, I've heard sometimes it even works with a male thats not even sexually mature. I would try a smaller male so the bigger/more dominant male will take the hint.

Or..... another route would be to take the shed skin of another male and place it in the tank with them. Just having the scent can sometimes do the trick.

I can't attest to either of these working, I've never had to come down to it, but it seems like it makes sense. It was just a few ideas I've picked up in conversations with other breeders.

Best of luck to ya. Hope it works.

Thanks for the tips! I added another male with the 50% het and the DH sunglow. I figure that since the definate het hasn't ovulated yet I can figure out which male is more dominant by using the possible het, because I don't care which one breeds her.

Why risk a sub standard breeding by grouping with additional males when the age old trick of adding other male "sheds" to the bedroom.
Dont believe it ? try putting another male shed in the cage with a single male and see how he acts !! LOL!Bet he wont like another stud on his turf.

Good Luck !

The shed switch was the first thing that we tried, but it wasn't affective. We originally just had a het male in with the Poss. het female, so a dh sunglow would be an improvement anyway. Hopefully he'll still have it in him for our het girl.
