Bougainvillea poisonous?

bayzow Oct 25, 2006 12:09 PM

Does anyone know if bougainvillea petals are poisonous? The prevailing wisdom among dog and cat owners is that they are not, but I wondered if they are for cyclura, or if anyone knows. I know hibiscus is the petal that seems to be the fav for ig folks, but i have no access to those, and my cyclura looks at our bougainvillea all the time. But not knowing if it's safe, I haven't let him try one.

They are not poisonous to iguanas. The wild common and spinny tailed iguanas here eat them although they are not the food of choice. Your Cycluras may find them unappetizing.

I occasionally grab weeds, vines, flowers, palm nuts, etc and feed my cycluras that stuff just for variety. I usually observe what spinnytails and common iguanas are feeding on or from examining fecal matter and feed that type of stuff to my Cycluras and Ctenosauras.
