Is this legal?help..

anafranil Oct 25, 2006 03:23 PM

I have been ordering insects through the net via mail,I live in Cyprus,Europe and I'm shopping from a british breeder.Ordering through the net and post office is the only solution cause the hobby is not really well known here and hobbyists should be self sustained. How can I find if what I'm doing is legal?Knowing the mentality of people here I think that they would hang me if they new...
If they prevent me from continueing my reptiles would starve to death,I have three mouths to feed..This company sells insects to many european countries. How could this be legal?Sending live animals to another country without anyone knowing?I can't believe that the whole company operates illegally.I have tried to contact them but they completely ignore me.I would like to listen to your opinion
Thanks

I can only speak for the USA, but this may give you some places to check out the legality. Your country should have an agricultural or livestock agency that regulates import and export of insects and other live creatures. Possibly a customs agency does the shipment inspections of all live organizms arriving in your ports of entry. The company would probably need some type of import permit or license to bring their feeders in. They may have this already. You can ask what their import authority is and who issues it to them. If you don't trust the answer you get, you could check to see if their company is an authorized shipper into Cyprus. Frankly, a bix box of crix is going to give itself away!

Check out the forums at insect.net. They have one specifically on Legal and Environmental Issues and have members worldwide. I am sure if you post there you can get a reply. Great site for all things "bugs" whether feeder, collecting or pets

As Carlton said, the company has the onus of permits. I know in some cases (here in the states) the person receiving needs appropriate permits but that is more for collectors or trading livestock for breeding, not feeders insects.
