question on breeding to get albinos??

RobertIIII Oct 25, 2006 06:13 PM

Hi, excuse my ignorance, But I have been thinking about aquiring some ball pythons, and think I would like to start a breeding project up. Now my question is if I got a male that is 100% het for albino, and I bred him to like 3 normal females. they would produce P hets for albino correct? so then I would have to breed the daughters back to their fathers to get albino? 100% het? Now I know I could get a female 100% het and breed her to the male and then chance's are I would get a albino or etc. but I need to go the more cheaper route. so any suggestions on what would be a good route to go to get albinos? I am new to the whole morph and traites and etc thing, so bear with me please. lol thanks again

If you get a male that is known to be heterozygous albino and breed him to some females, statistically half the babies would be heterozygous albinos. And, statistically, half the babies are males, and half are females. So half the males are heterozygous albino, and half the females are heterozygous albino. You just don't know which ones.

Breed the daughters to their father or to another heterozygous albino. The heterozygous daughters will produce some albinos, if you breed them long enough. Long enough means 18 babies if an albino does not pop out earlier.

Once you have some known heterozygous females, you can breed them to half brothers to find out which males are also heterozygous albino.

And you can use excess stock to swap or sell to get unrelated heterozygous animals.

I know at least one guy who got started with albinos this way.
