In regards to the recent calcium issues

AndrewFromSoCal Oct 25, 2006 11:53 PM

How do I know if my leo IS getting enough calcium? I dust his mealies and crickets, but how much actually stays on them? He also has a calcium cap full in his cage, but I don't know if he's licking it, or just walking over it. He walks through his water all the time. :

It is usually suggested to dust every other time, but I dust all the time that way it gets enough even if it does fall off. Any excess is deposited when he goes poopoo.

They will lick at the calcium, usually at night. I have witnessed it a few times in the day.

Is the deposited calcium the white stuff next to the poop?

And if so, he has a lot. Would it be best to dust every other day?

Nope, the white stuff with the poo is... well equivalent to our pee if you will. In no way an indication of Ca.

well as for the calcium dish MOST geckos lick it at night on occasion you will find the calcium addicted gecko like mine that dives head first in the calcium every chance he gets...thats where he got his name "tony" from scarface...because when he does it he walks around with white powder all over his snout...lol...I dust his every other day there is no dopubt about him getting enough calcium...lol...with our big one I dust with calcium for two feedings then vitamins for one then calcium for two...ect....

This was taken from the "Gecko's Mali Uromastyx Care Sheet"
The same camn be applied to other lizard species as well.

Output · Things which come out of a Uromastyx · Granted, these things may also come out of other lizards, but we're talking about uros here! Here is a list of what happens when your uro arches his tail in that special way. (This section based on information submitted by Jason Mottern.)

Clear Water · Reptile kidneys are incapable of producing hyperosmotic (simplified, salty) urine like in mammals. That's why excess hydration is expelled as clear water.

Feces · You know it, you love it. It's one of the reasons why uro care isn't nearly as difficult for the "sensitive of nose" as, oh, dogs or cats.

The yellowish white stuff · Nitrogenous wastes are excreted as an insoluble salt and uric acid at the end.

If you see anything else coming out of your uro, such as blood or worms, get it to a vet or someone very experienced in uromastyx care immediately! The Uromastyx Mailing List is a great source of information, as well, but if you count on me as your only online source of emergency uromastyx care, you will be sorely disappointed and I take no personal responsibility for your inaction.
