Chondros Copulating

vegasbilly Oct 26, 2006 11:49 AM

Hey all!

After 3 dismal seasons w/no results, I went out to the snake room this morning to see this couple locked up. Now, of course the paranoia sets in!! LOL. My questions regard cycling, the female has only been cycling for 3 weeks and the male not at all. I just recently added him to my collection. I've been moving cages to varying heighths so as to get more consistent temps (higher cages have been running 5-7 degrees warmer than the bottom cages). I was putting all the Chondros up high and the Emeralds on the lower tiers. So, I put the new male in w/this female until his cage was ready (today)and voila, copulation!

Will this lack of cycling "duration" affect potential fertility?
Do you all remove the male after their finished and reintroduce him again in a few days? Is there any need to try another male as well?

Now, if all my ETBs come through like this it could be a banner season!

Did your male spend any time in quarantine before he was introduced to the rest of your collection? I'd be more paranoid about bringing in disease than a lack of breeding. If he bred, he must not necessarily need cycling although I've heard that cycling is supposed to help with sperm viability. I'm sure the more experienced breeders will chime in? He's a beautiful animal though and good luck on your breeding!

I didn't quarantine him. The guy I got him from has had him since a hatchling and I picked it up in person and was able to assess things. His was a very small "collection" kept impeccably so I had/have no concerns in that regard.

Another thing, he has no interest in feeding as well. I removed him last night and will reintroduce them on Monday morning.
