Collared wont eat sometimes.

Fourstrings88 Oct 26, 2006 05:40 PM

Well my Collared has been being weird and I will admit I have been slacking just a few days in feeding him but I WOULD make up for it and feed him more, well hes been doing this a lot latlly. He will eat two or three roaches and then thatll be it.

I just started getting roaches and he seemed to like em at first but he does this with crix too. I thought maybe if I just get something bigger for him he might eat it but he just dosent seem to eat too much. Hes active and everything, hes pretty skinny and was thinking about force feeding but was scared.

Any suggestions??

maybe parasites?

how long has he been doing this? my guys normally eat alot less in the winter. when i first got walter (rip) i took that poor boy to the vet so many times thinking he might be ill because he wouldn't eat but he was just trying to sleep for the winter

Nah I dont think its Parasites, he would probably be more sluggish and stuff. Its jsut weird, maybe cause of the winter but I am not sure. Its been going on for a while now.

I dunno ill keep trying though

If he doesn't for one or two days I wouldn't be too worried about it, if he was to avoid eating for a week or more well then be worried.

Just consider in the wild that they don't eat everyday or as many insects as we do tend to feed them more than one in a feeding.

I think it's a combination of things,

1. Their time for brumation or just general slowdown is happening naturally about now.

2. Depending on the size and amount that he will eat, he won't be hungry for a couple of days.

Since about September my "Greenies", have both been getting up at about 10am, they laze around the tank, wait for me to feed them when I get home at 17:30, digest under the basking light for a short while and go to bed. They're really sluggish, and sleep on and off throughout the day too, they really do seem well and truly ready for a nice long kip. The female has a voracious appetite, she will literally jump out of the tank into the cricket box, she get that excited about food, whatever its form. The male, however is totally the opposite. If I put the cricket box under his nose he will eat til he's full. If I let them loose in the tank he will sit there watching with one eye open, and refuse to chase them. They do seem better with small locusts, and wax worms

If your lizard is wild caught, it could be reacting to the changes in the season by slowing down on eating. It's internal clock could be telling it that it's time to brumate.

So How do I know its in Brumation?

Is he in it right now? Cause he still does what he does everyday jumps around and gets up nothing has changed but him just not really eating.
