Where to get mice (the real answer!)

LarryF Oct 26, 2006 10:32 PM

In the mouse cage of course!

This is how I found out that one of my ratsnake cages was no longer latching properly. This guy has been a picky eater recently, and I'm happy he found an eatery he likes, but I wish he hadn't eaten an entire litter of pinkies and at least one of my breeder females...

Hahaha...

At least you found him though... A lot of people aren't so lucky. Plus, it looks like you won't have to feed him for a week or two.

For now, all the snakes (and the mice) are in my hermetically sealed hot room. He wasn't going anywhere...

I used to breed my mice in an outdoor closet (to cut down on the smell). I would invariably find one or two wild yearling TX ratsnakes a season in a mouse cage with that "I can't believe I ate the whole thing!" look on their faces. I would just put them outside and let them go along their way.

A friend who lived nearby had a similar problem, but his most common offenders were Louisiana Milksnakes in the mouse room. They never managed to climb up into the cages like the ratsnakes do.

Haha! I've found a few corns and yellow rats in my mice cages over the years. A few years ago I found a female amel corn in my mice racks. I had no amels at all before that. Since she "stole" some of my breeders, I figured she'd be put to work breeding for me. I bred her to a snow male and instead of amels, I got 50%amels and 50% snows. Obviously someone lost an amel het/anery, huh?
