Controlling Temps

wanderinglost Oct 27, 2006 01:24 AM

hey guys i was just wondering how you all controlled the temps of your tanks with under tank heaters. I think mine get the tank just a little too hot directly under them, and I am concerned about this. Thanks in advance!

You said:

"...get the tank just a little too hot directly under them..."

Are you worried about the surface the tank is on? (Under the UTH)

Or are you worried about the basking spot inside where the gecko is? (Directly above the UTH)

Things to check for both: is the tank elevated as per the instructions on the UTH, if the inside is too hot use more substrate or get a modulator/ dimmer switch found at hardware and even some pet stores. This is just what came to mind for general UTH concerns, but I still don't understand the problem.

hey thanks for the reply.
What I meant was the inside of the tank where the gecko is. What exacty is a "Modulator control"? I did elevate the tanks, and that got the temps to drop some, but it is still a little too hot inside the tank. Thanks.

A modulator control would be like a dimmer switch for a light. You can adjust the energy input which allows some variation of temps.
As sleepygecko said you can also increase the thickness of the substrate over the UTH to control it. For example if you use paper towels 2 thick, try 3 thick or more. If you use reptile carpet try putting paper towels under the carpet (or over it), or try double thick carpet where the UTH is.
Hope it helps.

I use rheostats with all of my UTH. You can get them anywhere.
