Nice animal!
I know what you mean about lighting. In my snake room I have flourescents and that's a problem, especially with brightly colored snakes.
My backyard is good sometimes but I always get shadows or something in there I didn't see at first...usually glare.
Thank goodness for digitals. It'd cost a lot to develop all my bad shots...

Surrender Dorothy!
And likewise a handsome devil you've got there Mark! I like the shape of the diamonds and the yellow.
Yes. The only light I get any kind of luck with is sunlight. But even there I have had a lot of problems. I recently got some advice from Chris Harrison on the Photography forum and I've gotten slightly better results. But I know what you mean about fluorescents. By the way, did you ever see what happens when you use the active UV heat bulbs as a light source? Here's a photo of a mandarin under incandescent light. The next is under this UV bulb. Pretty weird (but kind of cool).

Unfortunately my knowledge of photography is so primitive that it'll be several years before I can even take simple photos competently. Right now it's just hit and miss. But I like photos of mandarins so I keep hacking away. I'd really rather someone would publish a coffee table book of mandarin photos. Too bad they're from east asia instead of the US. Then there'd be a chance of someone doing some work with them.
Best regards
John
