A strange feeding

bsg915 Oct 28, 2006 09:12 AM

The other day I was feeding my Dumerils Boa,(Boa Constrictor dumerilli, does that mean it's Bcd. can I do that?), and "Rosy" squeezes that rat so hard around the mid section, after it's already dead mind you, that the rats stomache splits open, and all the insides just kind of fall out. They stayed attached and Rosy ate them all, but that was weird. I was completely baffled. I don't know why he would squeeze it again in the first place. Anybody else have an experience like this, or just another strange feeding time?

I have heard that is a result of over-warming the rat during thawing. I can't verify it. It's not uncommon and is messy, but not problematic.

Can someone please pass me the barbeque sauce?

It happens but is more common in slight decomposed food items. I have had fresh killed animals "blow" and splatter their rat's guts out but only rarely. Usually it's a food item that is not fresh frozen and then thawed or that has been dead a little long and then fed. It's doesn't hurt the snake by the way. It all goes to the same place like me Dad used to tell me.

Now, where is that barbeque sauce?

it's happened to me before, with prekilled and even with f/t.

Duméril's Boas are Acrantophis dumerili. They are not within the genus Boa.

Anyway, the rat/mouse may have been frozen or a long time, or thawed in a way to cause it to break down early. When I had my very first snake I would heat the frozen mouse up under a lamp, and the stomach ruptered a few times. I've found the BEST way to thaw rodents it to place them in a zip-lock bag and let them sit out over night (the same way you thaw meat to cook).

Now that I think of it, I knew it wasn't in the Boa family. I just had a brain fart. Oops. I have had my Argentine Boa on the brain, which is Bco. I have to get rid of him because a lack of space. Quite sad really. But at anyrate, sorry for the brain fart.

Heh. Back when I was 'starting out', I tried thawing a mouse in the microwave (fortunately it was wrapped in paper towels and inside a ziplock just in case). Let's just say, well, there's a GOOD reason that whole animals should not be thawed in the microwave, no matter how slowly or how low the wattage. Air inside intestines = happy fun explosion! Last time I ever did that (the stench alone was enough to make me not repeat it). But I like to tell that story, especially when friends are eating lo-mein
