Veiled Eggs

sned25271 Oct 28, 2006 12:43 PM

Wow, my girl laid 60 eggs today. I have them setup in a rubbermaid container with a 50/50 mix of perlite/vermiculite. I moistened the substrate and I rung out the excess water. I put the lid on the container and drilled two small holes. The container is in my incubator at 78-82 degrees. Does this sound right? Any suggestions?

Thanks

That sounds good to me. I did pretty much the same, except I only used perlite. My temps were about 80 in the day and 75 at night. My girl laid 66 eggs and only 2 went bad. They hatched on day 200. Good luck!

Everything sounds good except for one thing possibly. A few months back it was discovered that Vermiculite contained Asbestos. Since then they have pulled it off the shelves. If you used a bag of old vermiculite, I would redo the whole setup with just Perlite. If you just recently purchased Vermiculite, then you are okay, they wouldn't be selling it now if it wasn't safe.

Hi, I am on my 5th clutch of eggs. My 5th is starting to hatch today. I also used the perlite and vermiculite mix I used distilled or dechlorinated water to moisten the soil. I also kept them in a rubbermade container in my closet with 2 small holes. The tempature in my closet was a constant 72 to 76. I had 100% hatch rate on all my clutches. Be sure you check the moist soil about once a week it just needs to clump together. All my veileds hatched at 8 months. One clutch hatched at 71/2 months. The one starting to hatch today was laid March 2oth. I believe that is about 71/2 months. I would check on your eggs everyday after 6 months. I checked last night and I thought they still had a couple of weeks to go. Right now I have 10 babies out of the clutch of 52 . Enjoy it so much fun watching the little guys come out. But they have to do themselves . We are not suppose to help them. After they come out of the egg I gently wipe them off with a moist paper towel and put them in a small screened cage. Make sure the water on the paper towel is distilled or dechlorinated water.
