US to Germany and want to take balls??

jlb5025 Oct 28, 2006 02:26 PM

Hi all,

I'm moving to Germany this coming summer and have a small ollection of ball pythons, albino's, mojaves, spiders, and pastels. I'm curious as to how to ship or how I could take them with me, if that is at all possible. Any advice or information that could help me out with this dilema would be greatly appreciated.

Ray Austin

You will have to go through the Importation/Exportation process or find a import/export dealer that will export them for you.

you need to get a US Cites for export, with this CITES you have to apply for an import permit at the "Bundesamt für Naturschutz" in Bonn. You also have to state meticulously how the animals will be kept, and German laws are relentless, we have a so caled "minimum requirement law for keeping reptiles" which, for instance, forbids to keep them in racks, only terraria are permitted, and the size has to be 1 x .75 x .5 the size of the snake, i.e. for a grow up female python you need a terarium of 5 foot length &c.
there may be inspections by the local authorities, and depending on where you move you may require a permission to keep "dangerous" animals, and all pythons are classified as thus ... sorry mate, don't hold me responsible

Thats why I'm stayin' right here in the good old USA. We still have some freedoms left here. It should be NOBODYS business what kind of tank/rack you keep YOUR snakes in. Unbelievable!!

Don't be to quick to judge - there are plenty of states/cities that are starting to classify any boid as a dangerous/wild animal in need of permits to keep. As well as new regulations and demands that are getting harder and harder to keep them.

In my city if you have more than 4 snakes you need to go thru inspection, permitting, and provide proof of insurance.

We aren't that far behind.

I live in Ma and the only laws here are that you need a very cheap permit to keep boids that are longer than 7 feet or endangered and if you have more than three breeding age females you need a breeders permit. And on top of that the laws aren't even enforced. Wow what a grooossss infringment of my rights. Have fun with your illigal wire taps reds!

If you are talking about Massachussets, the only thing that stinks living there is you cant have Anacondas, Retics, Chameleons, any large monitor, and species of tree boas or pythons and i know there are a few other things. I live in RI and we were actually looking into putting a show on in MA but you cant have a reptile show unless you have a quarinty room for each vendor..lol... they pretty much made it impossible to through a show in the state...

johnavilla Oct 30, 2006 09:54 AM

you just have to get that permit. I've met lots of people who own retics, and a few moniter owners. I don't remember exactly the price on the permits but as of last year it was'nt much.

one guy with a green anaconda who had a permit for him. Too bad about the show though! I can understand the thought behind it but... that sucks!

i know you can get permits but then you need one for each animal you own. I have a friend that lives in Dartmouth that applied for a permit and they told him that the monitor he owned was to large to keep in a cage that it needed a room, they denied him his permit and he had to get rid of his pet which he had raised from a baby.

Yeah the show thing sucked but we actually found a place in RI that is willing to house a large show, we are just going to advertise in Boston !! I think it should go very well, we are looking to put it on next year !!!

You can't take them with you. Sell them to me.......all of them................cheap............J/K

Thanks for the information that was provided. After researching further it seems like it will take a lot of work to move them from the US to Germany. As much as it kills me to do, it looks as if I will be selling my collection. It's a good thing it's not to big I think I will have success in findig them good homes.
