its called musk. All snakes produce it to my knowledge. Corns hardly ever use it and when they do, it does not smell anywhere near as bad. Garters have the worst smelling Musk, in my opinion. Followed by milks and kings.

Misty,

Have you smelled a water snake lately?
They're the worst!
Although I suppose stinkiness is in the nose of the beholder.

Misty, I think the closest thing you would have to a water snake is a krait see if you can get one to musk you!

I have never been musked by a water snake. But I will say garters and ribbons are the worst! Even if just due to their readiness to musk. like I said, I've never been musked by a water snake. But every garter snake that I have caught has musked me....

ounce for ounce, ringneck snakes have a much more potent musk for their size. Sometimes takes a few days for it to wear off even after washing several times.

I've been musked by rat snakes, corn snakes, king snakes, garter snakes, black racers, water snakes even a copperhead.
I have handled quite a few ringnecks, worm snakes, brown snakes and green snakes but have never been musked by any of them.
So...I am going to have to say in my opinion...garter snakes are the worst with water snakes right behind them in a very very close second.
I think it is the fish and frogs they eat.
