What kind of garter snake is this?

Sidney0805 Oct 28, 2006 07:18 PM

I've had some feedback from some people on here, in a different forum. I'd like to know for sure, if anyone can tell me what kind of garter snake I have. I caught her in the woods by my house. I live in Northeast Ohio. She is about 2 feet long. She's a good eater, pinkies and frogs.
Thanks for any help you can give!

That is most definitely an eastern garter. The three species of garters that are found in your state are the eastern, eastern plains and the butlers. With the exception of a few counties, easterns are found throughout the state. Butlers are found in the North western quadrant part of the state, while the eastern plains are limited to isolated colonies in Wyandot and Marion Counties.

Ok, another question....She (not positive if she's a she) has a voracious appetite. She is almost exactly 2 feet long. I've had her since last Monday. Tuesday she ate a pinky, Wednesday she ate a frog, Friday she ate 2 pinkies, and today, when I was cleaning her water bowl, she kept coming toward my hand, so I thawed 2 pinkies and she ate them like she hasn't eaten in a month.

I need to know, how often to feed her, and how much of what to feed her. I don't want to starve her and I don't want to over feed her. How many pinkies should I be giving her at a time? Will she just keep eating every time I offer her food, or will she not eat if she's not hungry?

Never been to a reptile expo. I am very new to snakes. My son has been wanting one for a long time, and I didn't think I could handle having one. But after seeing my snake in the woods, I figured what the hell. She was supposed to be my son's snake, but she has grown on me, and I really like her now.
I might, in the future, like to go to some kind of reptile show. I don't think I could ever get a bigger snake. So far so good, with this one though. And I think she is just so cute.

Thanks for your help! And your snakes are awesome!

I'd stay away from amphibians...they can get internal parasites from them. She will do fine on the frozen rodents. You can switch her to slightly larger mice...fuzzies, just a little fur growing, they are bigger and you can feed her one or 2 a week and she will do just fine.

Thanks for your help! I did buy some fuzzies the other day, and I fed her one and she still acted like she was starving. So I fed her the last pinky I had left. That seemed to satisfy her a little bit. Maybe because I caught her in the woods, is that why her appetite is so voracious? Because she had an abundant food supply. I just don't want to feel like I'm underfeeding her.

Thanks for all your help!

The wild caught garters in Ohio tend to be these colors... they have more light brown on them than is seen in other locales, and the belly can be very light.

I had a WC girl for a time, who had a red stripe on her side. The red was inbetween the scales, and would flash redder with each breath.

I hope you enjoy your snake...

Thanks! I am enjoying her. I do love her coloring. She is very pretty. I noticed after she's eaten, there are blue flecks in her coloring, where the bulge of the mouse is, on her belly. That's what attracted me to her. When I first saw her, she must have just eaten.
So far, she's been an awesome snake. Although I have nothing to compare her to, I've never even touched a snake before, lol!

Thanks for all your help!
